So, I was watching “Nights In Rodanthe” over the weekend (save the judgment–you know you’ve all seen a Nicholas Sparks movie—or four!) and sharing a bottle of wine with, *cough*, myself (again, you know you’ve been there) and was almost hit over the head with my sudden attraction to Richard Gere.
And, no, it wasn’t the wine (ok, maybe just a wee bit). I started looking at him….I mean really looking. I took in his full head of hair (albeit gray), his eyes (especially the crow’s feet around them), his face (yeah, the one that starred in “An Officer and a Gentleman” the year I was in the second grade) and, well, suddenly the whole Richard Gere package was just working for me.
I could imagine doing really naughty things with this man who had to be old enough to be my father (yup, just checked his IMDB profile, he is). As I pushed my knowledge of his humanitarian mumbo jumbo and his love of the Dalai Lama to the back of my mind (such a buzz kill), I wished I was his leading lady. I imagined that I was Diane Lane’s character, a blanket draped around my shoulders, our bodies touching as we stood on the porch of the bed and breakfast, staring out at the wild sea.
But here’s the thing, this wasn’t the first Richard Gere movie I’d seen. I don’t remember thinking naughty things when I saw him in “Unfaithful” a few years ago. But I do clearly remember daydreaming about Oliver Martinez– the much younger actor that Diane Lane was doing the nasty with. (Again, so wanting to be her).
So why Richard Gere? Why now? Is it because I’m getting older? It’s true I’m about to turn 36 and maybe I’ve been thinking about that– a lot.
With each passing year am I going to be more attracted to “older” men and less attracted to the younger ones? I pray not! I want to be a cougar when I qualify (when is that, BTW?). It’s a label I’ll proudly wear.
But the question is–can I have desires for males on both sides of the age hemisphere? Can I simultaneously lust after the picture of my current boyfriend at age 19 (like when his shirtless photo was posted on Facebook last week) and a man who watched Neil Armstrong land on the moon on live TV?
When I told Liz about my lust for Richard Gere, she proudly exclaimed that she thinks Tom Selleck is just as hot now as he was when he starred in Magnum, P.I. twenty nine years ago. (Incidentally, dear ‘ol Tom is four years older than Richard, but who’s counting?).
So what other distinguished gentleman would star in my personal fantasy?… Of course there’s Pierce Brosnan (who you might be shocked to learn is 56!– I know I am!), Harrison Ford (when did Indiana turn 67?) and, of course, George Clooney (almost 50–but I’m convinced he’ll still be hot when he’s 85!).
So next time People’s Sexiest Man Alive is a silver fox, we should all pay more attention. As far as I’m concerned, gray is the new black.

I’m sorry but Richard doesn’t hold a candle to my boy Magnum PI!!!
You really want to have an “old man” throw down right now?
Um, I think we all know who would win a Tom Selleck/Richard Gere throw down.
Sorry… but I’m just not a mustache kinda gal.
I always think Richard Gere looks like he would be an awesome kisser!!
HA HA HA
I am so with Liz on this one. Tom Selleck is HOT! I just saw part of an interview he did on Jon Stewart. Who cares that he was talking about sheep…I was swooning just like when I was 10 and watched Magnum PI.
BTW, I think I heard that Matthew McConaughey was going to star in the film version. Yucky on MM. There is something about him that is not appealing.
Richard Gere, George Clooney… some guys just stand the test of time. I tend to develop cougar crushes on American Idol contestants (and you so know the rest of you secretly watch, too) but I’m generous enough not to discriminate because of age. But Harrison Ford isn’t doing it for me lately, and not just because of the earring.
Oh, I’ve been in love with Richard Gere since seeing him in Pretty Woman. *drool* I am the same age as you. I have yet to see Nights in Rodanthe, but I sure want to see it.
I found your blog via Amazon Chicklit forum. Love it!!
You mean you didn’t fall for him in Pretty Woman….watch that movie again and you will be drooling…I still have a thing for Clint Eastwood who is 73 or so!! I have had a crush on him since he was in the Spaghetti Westerns in the 60′s…I am watching Nights in Rodanthe tonight and have my drooling bib ready….from one who also watched the moon landing live…:-)
Honestly, “Pretty Woman” is one of my favorite Chick Flicks of all time (made obvious by the many, many references to it in our book), but I’ve never seen him “that way” in the GAZILLION times I’ve watched it. I will now view again with my new “silver fox” eyes and see if he does it for me!??! I’m going to let you have Clint although from a professional perspective, I’m totally enamored of him (do you know he scores many of his movies?). Get prepared to cry when you watch Nights in Rodanthe, BTW. Again, maybe it was my bottle of wine, but it’s pretty sad (in a good way).
So happy you found us! And happy to meet another RG fan. He’s pretty damn hot!
Yeah.. Harrison is borderline for me. If you’d asked me a couple years ago, PRE-EARRING and PRE-REPRISING INDIANA, I would’ve said he was sexy. I mean this is Hans Solo we’re talking about. But I’m over him now. Calista can have him.
On the AI note, I’m curious who you have a CC on this season? I’m pretty disappointed–so far– with the performances and with the lack of eye candy.
Watch Nights in Rodanthe and you will think he’s awesome at “other” things too!
Hmm… I encourage you to watch “Nights in Rodanthe”. There’s something about his hair blowing in the sea breeze coupled with his sensitive, romantic side that really does it for me.
Regarding, Tom….thinking back to when he was on “Friends” I guess he looked pretty good for an old dude. At least Monica thought so
Hey I bet if you watch “Bridges of Madison County” you may look at Clint differently…especially the seen with his shirt off…he was like 67 or so in that movie..Plus Dustin Hoffman looks pretty darn cute in the trailers for his latest movie with Emma Thompson!!
Hey Liz…one thing about Tom Selleck is that he has a wierd waist and rear end…he has gotten a little chunky since Magnum Days sorry but I think RG has him beat on the total package….And for the RG fans remember how precious and handsome he was in “Shall We Dance” I so wanted to be Jennifer Loftis!!!
I meant to say Jennifer Lopez!
I have actually seen Bridges of Madison County and I thought he did a really great ACTING job in it. However, I didn’t find myself wanting to be Meryl Streep’s character. And Dustin Hoffman? Really? On a positive note, I have heard he’s really, really nice in person
PS: I’m not judging. I’m sure in like 5 years, I’ll be into Al Pacino.
From a cougar standpoint, i could certainly go for Brad Pitt…isn’t he in his forties now?
Nice choice. Brad Pitt is H-O-T with a capital “H”….and yes, he’s in his forties now–42.
Valerie,
So are you saying that my man Magnum has a big ass now? Total buzzkill!
Liz,
He has a “wierd” rear end….it is too wide…men are supposed to be shaped bigger at the shoulders and then get narrower to the hips…He has a block shaped body…I noticed it on Friends and it was a total downer….He was his best in “Three Men and a Baby”….
Lisa — I think Danny has potential. I bet he cutes up after a few shows. And he’s a good dancer.
I met Tom Selleck years ago when I worked as an extra on the movie “Her Alibi” which was partly filmed in Baltimore. He was dressed as a clown the whole time so I couldn’t assess his cuteness factor in person, but I do recall he seemed a bit whiny on the phone to his wife. Sorry.
Sarah–I agree with you about Danny! I definitely have a soft spot for him. And he’ll totally “cute up”…
He’s my only hope because I don’t find any of the others remotely attractive. Boo!!
All these comments are making me spin…but I’ll tell you this…I’m going the opposite and dying my hair GRAY and am going to be the MAN next time I am in LA!
Sarah, why the hell was Magnum wearing a clown suit? To cover his big ass?
Honey, you’re already the MAN! You’re my “man” friend, remember? You don’t need to dye your hair GRAY–even if it is the new black!
In an effort to keep this clean and to avoid being told to “get a room” I’ll simply say, you’re like a fine wine, you’re only going to get BETTER with age.
It was a circus scene and he was going undercover to rescue Paulina Poritzkova. Tom S. had this giant hula-hoop like-ring holding up his pants so there could be no independent confirmation of his ass size or its Spongebob-like shape.
Funny! And there’s always room for a Spongebob reference! I wonder if Tom also lives in a pineapple under the sea? Is that where big-assed silver foxes retire?
Richard is the hottest of all!!!!! I think he is a very nice man! I would like to have dinner with him hm hm!!!
Carey is a very lucky women!
Carine,
I agree! xoxo
Carine–Richard is DREAMY! Love him! xo
Well let me tell u something: I’m 18 and I just love him!! I’m nuts about Richard and I want 2 meet a guy like him someday, I mean he’s…yummy! my friends say that he’s too old that he could be my grandfather but I don’t care, I still thinking that he’s sexy, so don’t worry, he’s just irresistible!!
Stephanie, I agree! Richard Gere is the ULTIMATE silver fox! xoxo
Richard is and will always be that sexy man we love and adore.
Matilda–I couldn’t agree more!!!
Richard gere is cute in whatever movie he is in!!
i mean he is a genuin chick magnet, seriously , from his outstanding personality , to his candid spirit, not to forget of course his great looks! I will say this, he is truely the most handsome man alive!!<3
Zeina, we couldn’t agree more! xo
