So y’all know how much I love Barry Blackberry. In fact, I just about died when I went into radio silence for 48 hours earlier this year. And although I know they say absence makes the heart grow fonder, I found myself dreaming of another after my Barry came back to me.
For some reason I just couldn’t get Droid off my mind.
And it wasn’t fair really. Barry had always been there for me with lightning fast email and an easy to use typepad-I could practically text with my eyes closed! He was solid and dependable, the kind of phone that wouldn’t ever let me down.
That’s why, at first, I attempted to ignore Droid’s cool apps and incredibly fast internet. And I tried not to look when the person next to me was watching the latest cool YouTube video on him. I’m fine with Barry. I don’t some trendy phone. Barry’s always been there in good times and bad. Show some loyalty damnit!
And I swear, I didn’t mean to drop Barry in the parking lot that day. And what was I supposed to do when it was clear I needed a new phone? I was due for an upgrade, right? When the lovely Verizon salesperson asked me what phone I wanted, I meant to say Blackberry, I really did. But for some reason the word DROID came out of my mouth.
And thus began the most frustrating 24 hours of my life.
I was practically drooling by the time when I got Droid home. I couldn’t wait to have some alone time with him. That’s when I discovered that my other electronic boyfriend wasn’t happy at all with my new purchase. That’s right. Mac and Droid hated each other immediately. Mac didn’t want to give up his contacts or update his calendar for Droid. Clearly, he had more loyalty to Barry Blackberry than I had realized. But after three agonizing hours of negotiations, I finally found a way for them to share their information. But neither of them seemed pleased about it.
The next morning, Droid and I were quarreling again, this time over email. Droid didn’t think it was necessary to put any history in my email replies. I, on the other hand, felt this was VERY important. And let’s just say Lisa was less than thrilled with this new development and I became tired of receiving a What does this mean! or WTF are you replying to! response to every reply. And don’t even get me started on my inability to form a cohesive sentence on that touchscreen or the creepy way it would say “DROID” when I got a text message. (Seriously! How freakin’ narcissistic can you be?)
That’s when I knew Droid had to go.
Part of me was sad. I had barely had time to use my new Yelp app or Facebook to my heart’s content. But I only needed 24 hours to convince me that I had made a huge mistake letting Barry go and I knew one thing for sure. I had to get Barry Blackberry back asap.
I sped to the nearest Verizon store, hoping to find a way to beg for Barry’s forgiveness. To tell him that I’d gladly take his internet speed and poor selection of apps over that fancy schamcy Droid. That Droid had made me feel all of my thirty-six years. That I’d do just about anything to see that little star letting me know I had email again.
But like the class act he is, Barry took my betrayal like a man. In fact, he even introduced me to his hunky older brother Storm. He felt like his push screen would really make me happy. And as usual, he was right-it did!
So I’m happy to say Barry and I are back together. Even Mac seemed pleased that he had his old buddy around to share information with. And while I may still get a little butterfly in my stomach everytime I see Droid, I know now that looks can be deceiving. Barry Blackberry has my heart forever!
Or at least until Verizon gets the iPhone.

haha,,this is very cute!!! My husband just got the Droid last week, and my 17 year old son shook his head and said” Dad will never figure that one out!” So far , so good -except for being 20 minutes late for a breakfast meeting because the calendar alarm failed to alert him! I say, let him have his Droid (by the way, what a name!) I am forever holding on to my BB!
Thanks Beth! Yes, I know people LOVE their Droids, for some reason it drove me crazy. Maybe I just felt guilty for cheating on Barry Blackberry…
I just got a Droid on Saturday! Droid and I had a love fest under that greedy little bugger swallowed up 360 MB in just 30 hours! Dear Lord. Now Droid and I aren’t talking.
I can certainly sympathize with you on this one. I had a Blackberry for years and I made that switch to the Droid with Verizon. It took me a good 2 months before I was completely comfortable with the new phone. But honestly….I love my Droid now. I can’t really imagine going back to the Blackberry since the Droid apps have managed to simplify a few things in my life. For example, I have an app that makes my grocery list. No more losing the list in the bottom of my pocketbook anymore! :)
Hysterical!! I love this! But, I must admit ~ and I am SO the “Mac Gal” ~ I feel exactly the opposite. I had my Droid from Verizon, and everyone kept raving about their Blackberry … I thought I MUST be missing something pretty special, so my hubby & I agreed to switch for a bit so I could try out his Blackberry. I felt like a fish out of water! SO did not enjoy the tiny little buttons … every text I sent was from “fat finger hell” … even after it took me 5 minutes extra, trying to make some sense with what I typed! I LOVED my Droid, and happily went back. Then … in an effort to be more budget-conscious ~ to the tune of more than $100/month ~ we decided to switch to TMobile. Uh, let’s just say that going from Verizon to TMobile was like you trying to make the Droid “fit” your lifestyle when you are, quite obviously, a “Blackberry kinda woman”. I now have TMobile’s version of the Droid ~ not quite up to par with Verizon’s version. And the new cell service? Well, I now see how it can cost $100 less each month. None of my calls lasts long enough to rack up any chargeable minutes!!! = (
I love my BB but it seems to spend an awful lot of time “thinking” (spinning hour glass). I done everything to try to speed it up to no avail. Rumor has it that Verizon is supposed to get iPhone in January (according to several media stories)….I’ll be the first to jump ship!
Talli, LOL! That is too funny. Droid was a bad boy…
Melissa, oh, good thing I didn’t find that app. Then Barry Blackberry might have been in trouble…=)
Jules, too funny! And I think my Mac problem was I use the contacts and ICal so much on Mac, Droid wants all my stuff on Google. Which you can do, it just takes a lot more work and it wasn’t going to able to update my contacts on my /mac automatically when I updated them on my phone. Argh! And hear you, I’ve been tempted to switch from Verizon too to save money. Hope T Mobile stops dropping calls, that sucks!!!
PaulaO, I’ve heard that too. Let’s cross our fingers! xo
I’m a Sprint gal, have been, probably always will be. My Mac loves my Pre. I too am waiting for the iPhone, really I’m drooling over the idea of having one!!
Here’s a funny about the DROID… Ya know the word DROID, it’s from Star Wars, all over the movies the DRIODS they build, the decon-DROIDS… Check out the tiny print at the end of the commercial, George Lucas owns the naming rights to DROID. That man is S.M.A.R.T. & R.I.C.H.!
I have had a BB for a little over a month now and I love it:) My hubby has an Iphone so I get the best of both worlds!
Liz, you and Barry are meant to be. I’m not even sure an iPhone can replace the love you and Barry share. You have something really special that cannot be duplicated. As easy as it is to be swayed by the Bells and Whistles of “others”, there are things about Barry that you can’t get with another. For example, you’re always bragging about how your emails just pop up on the screen from every email address you have. Well, my friend, that won’t happen with the iphone. Sure, it can give you a little announcement bell as to remind you that you have email, but it’s up to you to go into the app and find your latest message. That’s not something I’m sure you’re prepared to do. Having had Barry and Ian at the same time (it was pretty fun!) I had the best of both worlds. The internet and apps on iPhone and the easy emailing and actual keyboard on the Blackberry. Until they can figure out away to combine the two, I think you should stay put. And love the one you’re with :)
LOL I love this post. I have a blackberry also but I am thinking about a droid myself. I do have gmail so I like the fact that I can gmail and google message with ease, but the blackberry has served me well. I also have a Itouch and if (I dont get my hopes up) the Ipod comes to verizon, its over. I love the apps!
I completely understand!
I would be at a total loss with out my Blackberry. My hubby has a Droid, and he seems to love it, but nothing will fill my technological heart the way that my Blackberry does. Besides the obvious wonderful email capabilities…who can really make it without Blackberry Messenger??
I had a love affair with my Sidekick but after the abuse I took after the big data fail of 2009 I felt I had to part ways. And into my life came the BB!!! My boyfriend has one of those new fangled touch screen doo-dads where every app but the one he wants will open. I especially love all of those “butt dials” I receive from him where I get to hear all about his day through my voicemail – literally. Never had those problems with my BB :) This is true love!
Michelle, that is funny, I had no idea! And i love Palm too, I was a treo girl for years…
Sarah, yes you do! I’m jealous!
Lisa, I know, I know…you know how much I look forward to that little email star. I don’t know why I’m so disloyal to Barry when he’s been so good to me.
Raquel, if you’re already a gmail person then you might like it. I have a an iTouch too, aren’t they great? Love it!
Danica, I know, right? Sometimes I wonder what I did before Barry Blackberry came along?
Kourtney, ah, the butt dials! Love it! That is so funny!
Awwww I was hoping that when you made the switch you would fall hopelessly in love with your droid!!! When I first switched, I got that same phone you have pictured… the Motorola Droid- and I too, HATED it. Anyhow, I switched to the LG Ally, which is an LG Phone working on the Android platform and I just LOVE LOVE LOVE it! But my best friend won’t let her blackberry go =) I think whatever phone you get is such a personal decision based on certain expectations each individual has for their phone. I don’t receive any business correspondence on my Droid, that all stays at work thank god so for me, the Droid has worked out fabulously :)
P.S. The huge deal breaker for me is the amazing Google Maps Navigation that the android platform phones have to offer. I don’t know if I could live without it now!!
Sarah, I know, those maps are AWESOME!
After a day like today..I could go for a Margarita in Mexico!!
Jen, Let’s go, I need a margarita too! Right now!
