Back in the 80′s there were a few things you could always count on-that Lisa would be wearing high tops and a jean jacket and that Liz would have a big, fat scrunchy in her hair. Oh, and that we’d both have our noses in the latest SVH book!
The Sweet Valley High series had it all back then. Liz used to dream about naughty Bruce Patman(Is that where she developed her bad boy infatuation?), while Lisa was more of a Todd Wilkins kind of girl. We giggled as they switched identities to mess with people and held our breath when Elizabeth was kidnapped. (We always did love the dramz…)
Long story short, we loved it! In fact, we may go as far to even say that SVH was our first foray into chick lit. And look how that turned out!
So imagine our excitement when we discovered that the fantabulous Francine Pascal was writing a sequel to our beloved Sweet Valley High. Fast forward ten years and beloved identical twins Jessica and Elizabeth Wakefield are back and all grown up, dealing with the complicated adult world of love, careers, betrayal, and sisterhood in Sweet Valley Confidential (St. Martin’s Press), due out in March 2011.
We’re dying to know if Liz is on the corporate fast track or if Jess has become a hot mess. If Liz has become a total Facebook whore or if Jess is addicted to You Tube. And we’re not the only ones, even blogger Perez Hilton is excited to see what these beyotches have been up to!!
And exclusive to Chick Lit is not Dead readers, Francine was nice enough to give us a little refresher course in all things Sweet Valley in preparation for the sequel. We also have THREE SETS of Team Liz/Team Jess T-shirts to give away to five lucky readers. Just leave a comment and we’ll pick the winners on Friday night.
5 Things You Didn’t Know About Elizabeth and Jessica back at Sweet Valley High, by Francine Pascal
I wrote Sweet Valley Confidential for my fans who after all this time, are still curious to know what has become of the twins and their friends. I was curious myself. These characters were so close to me for years and I found that I wanted to delve into their reality as adults and discover who they turned out to be. Just like the people we went to high-school with there is a curiosity about where they are now and what they’re doing. I wanted to give my fans the opportunity to visit Sweet Valley one more time.
1. Elizabeth and Jessica Wakefield were perfect size six twins, identical in every way—the same honey-and-sunshine hair, the same aquamarine eyes and a perfect, even feature. The exception was that Liz’s face often wore a concerned expression in contract to Jess’ look of playful triumph. Both mirrored who they really were. Elizabeth worried too much and Jessica not enough.
2. Four minutes older than Jessica, Elizabeth seemed years ahead in maturity and she was more sensible, thoughtful and always there for the friend in need or the underdog. Additionally, she was organized, controlled and studious. The perfect sister who sometimes bemoaned the fact that couldn’t let go and have a little more fun. She was always covering up for her sister and sometimes not so willingly. Her constant defense of Jessica caused her to have more than a few fights off screen with her equally perfect boyfriend, Todd.
3. Jessica was the most popular girl at Sweet Valley High. As head cheerleader, she dated all the hot boys and most of the bad ones, too, and probably defined the term “frenemy.” Jessica was adventurous, always looking for the next big one, sometimes even scaring herself. Enviable in many ways, Jessica was a risk-taker with a “come hither” quality that fascinated. But sometimes it fascinated the wrong people and then she had to run to her sister for help.
4. Both girls had the advantage of fabulous looks. Jessica certainly made more use of them than Elizabeth. But it helped both of them. Always more career-oriented, Elizabeth loved writing for the school newspaper, The Oracle. Even in high school she knew she wanted to be a journalist. Jessica was obsessed with fashion, glamor and social status and had no idea what she would become. Sometimes she worried about that, but then she would find a new boyfriend and all was well again.
5. While both girls had many friends, Enid Rollins was Elizabeth’s best friend and Lila Fowler was Jessica’s. Liz was a one guy girl and that guy was always Todd Wilkins. And, as far as she was concerned, it would always be that way. As for Jessica, she dated just about every popular guy including Bill Chase, Ken Mathews and, of course, Bruce Patman and was always looking for the next one. Sometimes she wondered if she would ever find the right one and be able to stop looking.

I grew up on these books…I sooooo identified with Liz and was always jealous of Jess. Cannot wait to read what’s happened since then!
It was book #40 (I think) – the one where Regina goes to a party after a bad break up with Bruce and she tries cocaine once and she DIES that kept me off drugs. True story. I was terrified I would die from trying something just once, so I never did. Thanks, Francine!
I was OBSESSED with the twins back in the day! In fact, I credit Francine Pascal for many an “A” on my summer book reports. (Yes, I did book reports when I wasn’t even in school. Guess it was the budding writer in me!) She paved the way for so many fun writers (like us)!
Thanks so much for posting this! Can’t wait for the sequel! :)
oohh..I loved these books in junior high! I could sooo rock a Tshirt! Would be perfect for me and my best friend and our upcoming girls weekend in Jersey!!!!
I am so excited to hear this!!! The SVH series is one of my all time favorites! Liz was definitely my girl – she was super sweet, conservative and loved to write. In some ways I think she inspired me to pursue a career in communications. Team Liz all the wayyyyy!!!!
My day has been made – thanks gals!!! :-)
Get out! How cool is that!? Would love a shirt and cannot wait for the book!
I can’t wait to read this! I’ve been a fan for years and still have all the books (hundreds!) I’m so glad to see something like this for us fans. Excited!
So looking forward to this! I grew up on SVH..cant wait!
*grinning dorkishly* I loved Sweet Valley so much that I never grew out of them. My infatuation just slowly morphed from obsession to guilty pleasure to happy nostalgia. For 16 years straight, I kept them – proudly displayed on shelves, boxed up for space reasons, and eventually proudly displayed on shelves again when I moved out on my own. Hellz YEAH, i want a shirt! Team Jessica FTW! (Although a Team Lila shirt would be 137 kinds of awesome!)
I loved these books…they were hand me downs from my older sister:) We both enjoyed them!
Allison, I was the same way! So excited! Thanks for the comment!
Really looking forward to the book! And I’d love a t-shirt! I’m team Elizabeth!
Jenny, wow! But I can totally see that. I think SVH was really influential at that time.
She Said, That’s so “Elizabeth” of you to do a book report in the summer! ha!

Oh how I wanted to BE the twins when I was younger :) How exciting there’s going to be a new book!
P.S. Liz and Lisa I love your use of the word FANTABULOUS!!! One of my personal faves in my vocabulary <3
I am so excited for this book to come out! I loved this series as a kid and I can even remember a Sunday that I spent in my room reading not one but two of these books in one sitting (well I’m sure I took a bathroom break;-). These books are truly what started my love of reading.
Lauren, me too!
Jess S, Seriously! I can’t wait!
Thanks Sarah! We think it’s FANTABULOUS that you like it. =)
Stephanie S, I couldn’t agree more!
What a fantastic blast from the past! I grew up reading these books and getting a taste of what being a teen was all about – I couldn’t wait for high school!! I never could or would have imagined we’d be treated to a fantastic update to these girls who were such a major part of my growing up. I can’t wait to get my hands on these books! I might just have to go dig my SVH novels back up and do a little walk down memory lane before this comes out. THANK YOU! :) What fun! :)
I’m wondering if I can ever forgive my parents for throwing my old SVH books away. I actually bought up all the SV Senior Year books & read them in secret even tho I was in grad school.
Looking forward to reading this book!!
I can’t wait for this!!!
I have no shame in admitting that when my sister (39) and myself (30) heard about this book, we literally squealed. Can.Not.Wait.
I cannot wait til the book comes out!! I have been a huge fan since I could read (I’m 26 now) and I started reading Sweet Valley by reading the first Sweet Valley Twins when I was little on the beach at Lake Tahoe, CA. I want to be able to one day have EVERY book ever made and so far I have collected half of the high school years and 3/4 of the college years. :) March 2011 can’t come fast enough!!
Since I still own my Sweet Valley High Board game (all of the pieces are intact) I will absolutely be buying this book on the release date. PS: Team Jessica!
I am so thrilled that this book is coming out. I devoured the SVT and SVH books as a girl!!!
This is so strange that this would be a topic this week. I LOVED these books when I was in elementary/middle school!! I (well my mom) saved all of them and I just dug them out to give to my neice on Monday! She is so much like me I just knew that she would love them! I can not wait to read this! It will be tourture waiting 6 months!!! I will have to set a reminder on my calendar….I wonder if we can pre-order anywhere?
Oh wow — I absolutely loved the Sweet Valley High books growing up, too! So excited to get my hands on this one next year.
WOW! I used to raid the library shelves for these books! I think I read them all, watched the show on TV, the whole mile!
I can’t even begin to tell you how excited I am to read this book!!! Today’s been a pretty good day for me so far, and you ladies have just made it perfect by sharing this! I still have the Sweet Valley Saga books, and I’ve been thinking about going back to read them again. Now that this book is coming out, I may have to! :)
Thanks again! And, Go Team Elizabeth!! :)
OOOHH I remember one time during my sophomore year in Highschool, my English teacher didn’t accept Sweet Valley HIgh book for my book review, I can’t remember if he retracted his decision!! BUt I love Sweet Valley books from twins to university and I loved Francine Pascal my first fave author ever!!
:) regina is quite possibly the best reason not to do drugs ever!
I have to admit that it seems like everyone love the book. I havent read those book in past. Im not sure why. I want to ask you should I read those books? Even Im in my late 30′a?
I loved this series … until my dad found a copy of SVH No. 5 “All Night Long” and banned me from reading them. I guess that one was a little risque for a nine-year-old. :)
Team Jessica!
enjoyed this posting … thanks for sharing :)
Thank you so much for sharing about this great book coming out!!! I am so excited and my 12 year old self is jumping for joy!!!

Noelle, you go girl!
Jenine, ha! “All Night Long” is one of the few that I remember well-i read it like 100 times! That Jessica was sooo naughty!
Christy, Hmm, that’s a tough one because I think a lot of us love it because of the nostalgia. BUT, they were really great books as a tween. I think either way, you’ll probably like the adult sequel coming out in March.
Ella, too funny!
Erin, I know right? I may need to find a copy!
Vera, me too!

Enjoyed this fun post down memory lane!
OMG! Holy CRAP! I am beyond excited!! I was such a SVH addict – had every single book…which may still be in my parents attic!?? ohh I was so into the whole Todd/ Elizabeth love story…sigh. A friend actually told me she heard they are making a tv show about the series in the near future??? let me know if you hear the scoop on this! :-}
I grew up reading all the Sweet Valley books. I love them! I already knew about the upcoming book and movie and I’m so excited! I still have most of my books and I can’t wait to revisit Sweet Valley. :-)

Great article!
Would LOVE a tshirt – too bad I’m not in America! :-)
Liz was a one-guy-only-girl until after The Evil Twins (after book 100) series. Then it became habit to cheat every other book, but wonder why she was cheating when she was a one-guy-only-girl. Lol.
Great post! Really looking forward to Sweet Valley Confidential. Loved the Sweet Valley Senior Year series :)
Chick Lit Bee, We are too! Thanks for the comment!
Sabrina-Michelle, Evil twins? What did I miss? Tell me!
Totally Sweet Valley, BUMMER!
