Kim Wright’s 5 Do’s and a Do-Over

by Liz

So what do you do when one of your all-time favorite books comes out in paperback?  Um, duh!  You beg the author to share her 5 Do’s and a Do-Over!

It was love at first sight when we read Love in Mid Air last year.  In fact, Liz named it as one her fave books of 2010.  Kim writes masterfully about the complexities of marriage and friendships and what could happen when you meet a hunky stranger on a commuter flight. And we weren’t the only ones who loved it.  People Magazine said, “Astute and engrossing, this debut is a treat!”

Here’s the scoop on Love in Mid Air:  A chance encounter with a stranger on an airplane sends Elyse Bearden into an emotional tailspin. Suddenly Elyse is willing to risk everything: her safe but stale marriage, her seemingly perfect life in an affluent Southern suburb, and her position in the community. She finds herself cutting through all the instincts that say “no” and instead lets “yes” happen. As Elyse embarks on a risky affair, her longtime friend Kelly and the other women in their book club begin to question their own decisions about love, sex, marriage, and freedom. There are consequences for Elyse, her family, and her circle of close friends, all of whom have an investment in her life continuing as normal. But is normal what she really wants after all? In the end it will take an extraordinary leap of faith for Elyse to find—and follow—her own path to happiness.

Sounds fab, right?  We have FIVE copies to give away!  Just leave a comment here and you’ll be entered to win a copy.  We’ll choose the winners on Sunday, August 7th after 6pm PST.

And we think you’ll love her 5 Do’s too…we definitely agree with number three!

CHICK LIT IS NOT DEAD PRESENTS…KIM WRIGHT’S 5 DO’S AND A DO-OVER

5 DO’S

1. Do dance.  I took up ballroom dance three years ago and it quickly zoomed from hobby to obsession.  Now I dance six days a week – tango, waltz, quickstep, and rumba – and it’s the primary joy of my life.  Next to writing, that is.

2. Do try lots of things.  Life may not be long, but it’s wide, and we can sample many experiences in the course of a single day.  I think it’s especially important to try new things as you get older, whether it’s learning to speak Italian, make the perfect crepe, get certified in scuba, or even just drive to work via a different route.

3. Do cut your hair whenever you feel like you need a change.  It’ll grow back.

4. Do go straight to Trader Joe’s and get the truffle cheese ($7), Epicuro red table wine ($6), and Dark Chocolate Covered Almonds with Sea Salt and Turbinado Sugar ($5).   Eighteen dollars and eighteen million calories, but I promise you’ll be a happy camper.    In fact, if you want to rip open the almonds and start eating them on the way home, I won’t tell.

5. Do read books you don’t expect to like.  Give them a chance.   If you’re a romance girl, check a mystery out of the library.  If you’re into self-help, read a thriller.  Or go back and tackle one of those classics you missed in school, like Moby Dick or David Copperfield.  Reading a book is a chance to be, for an hour or two at a time, completely outside of daily reality.   It’s the most accessible form of magic, so don’t be afraid to use reading as an escape chute that heads straight into some part of yourself you’ve forgotten, or even leads someplace that you’ve never been at all.

DO-OVER

I don’t regret many things in my life but one that’s definitely in the what-the-hell-was-I-thinking category was my decision to follow some sorry-butt boyfriend to another city.  He had a good job offer there, but I ended up waiting tables at a medieval-themed fondue restaurant located off an interstate exit.  I had to wear a lace-up bodice and short frilly skirt and greet people by saying “Hi, I’m Kim and I’ll be your serving wench.”  Why do women put their lives on hold to follow men all over the place – especially men who aren’t worth the sacrifice?  Thirty years later I still can’t bear the sight of those awful little fondue forks.

Thanks Kim! xoxo, L&L

I once had a job where I traveled via plane every week and thought surely I would meet my future husband that way. It never happened but would love to read about this chance encounter!

Jenny Ryan August 4, 2011 at 7:01 am

Sigh. We have no Trader Joe’s in Canada. It’s almost worth giving up health care and moving to the States. Almost….

Elise August 4, 2011 at 7:01 am

Love this post! And I also love the almonds, in a huge way. Agreed on the books, too. As a rule I shun romance novels, but I read Tawna Fenske’s Making Waves and LOVED IT! Never expected to have so much fun reading the book, and now I can’t wait for her next one.

Medieval-themed fondue restaurant? Had to be near a theme park, but not too near. I’m thinking a random suburb outside Orlando.

Congrats on the paperback, Kim!

Lacey August 4, 2011 at 7:04 am

I’ve had some great conversations on planes, and some really weird experiences, but I’ve never met a potential soul mate. I did once sit next to a guy who meowed at me.

That aside, I’d love to win a copy of this book!

Sarah Pearson August 4, 2011 at 7:56 am

I love the Do-over, but you know what’s worse? When you leave town to get away from someone and don’t tell them that’s why you’re going, and then they follow you :)

This book looks good. Thanks for the chance to win!

Kimmi August 5, 2011 at 10:28 am

I can vouch for reading books that you don’t think you’ll like. When I picked up “Mid Air”, I was convinced it wasn’t a good match for me, but I was sooooo wrong. It’s been a year since I read it and I still occasionally find myself thinking about the characters.

Laura Kay August 5, 2011 at 11:12 am

I’d love to win a copy!

Jen Daiker August 5, 2011 at 1:47 pm

I couldn’t agree more with #3! Sometimes we need to express ourselves, live a little, let loose. We make mistakes, and as woman I find that we’re often thankful the hair grows back, no matter how slow.

What a very intriguing book! Oh the struggles in life, knowing when to take the leap of faith, and when to be okay with the constant hum of every day life.

Lou August 5, 2011 at 2:52 pm

Ooooh, too cool … gotta either win myself a copy or buy one soon!

Jenn Doyle August 5, 2011 at 3:05 pm

LB Gschwandtner August 7, 2011 at 7:29 am

So, I went to France when I was 27, stayed at a place that a girlfriend I was traveling with selected (in Evian where the spring water comes from), met a tall handsome Austrian who asked me to marry him after our first — and only — date, married him 5 weeks later, and today is our 39th wedding anniversary.
Love sometimes does happen in Mid Air. Or mid vacay. I loved the book & rec it highly.

mep August 7, 2011 at 12:11 pm

I am so going after that truffle cheese this afternoon! I also heartily agree with the “do” about reading books you don’t think you’ll like. I’ve seldom branched out and been disappointed. I would love to win!

Lacey N August 31, 2011 at 6:56 pm

I just finished the book (that I won, yay) … WOW … I actually am inspired to start a book club just because I want to discuss this book with my friends (or maybe I just wanna find out if they think they’re ‘happily married’) … seriously, this book make me ask myself questions about my own marriage … I’m happy to report that my husband and I are STILL together … but seriously, I think there is a moment or a seasone or God Forbid an entire marriage when a woman questions … it this it? Am I being noticed? Is this all there is? Is this what I was told happily ever after would be? … I found the ‘affair’ in this story to be so insignificant … it was about as damaging to the existing marriage as a woman who is bored in her marriage so she either: watches soap operas, reads Harlequin Romances or maybe reads/watches too many dramas by Nicholas Sparks … there are times/seasons in a marriage where some people feel inviseable … this book showed that it’s okay to want to be SEEN! Okay, I’ve sorta gone overboard, but still … GREAT BOOK, great reflection and though provoking material … and great FICTION! Will recommend to friends (well maybe not friends on the verge of separation, but everyone else!)!!!
