Liane Moriarty’s 5 Loves and a Dud

by Lisa

It’s a party! We’re so excited the fabulous Liane Moriarty is our guest on CLIND! Cue the streamers, balloons and the big band! We’ve been a fan of this international best-selling author since we read her novel, Three Wishes. And we are majorly in love with her latest, What Alice Forgot, a story about what happens when you’re visited by your younger self and get a chance at a do-over. How many of us would love that?!

Here’s the skinny on What Alice Forgot:

Alice Love is twenty-nine years old, madly in love with her husband, and pregnant with their first child. So imagine her surprise when, after a fall, she comes to on the floor of a gym (a gym! she HATES the gym!) and discovers that she’s actually thirty-nine, has three children, and is in the midst of an acrimonious divorce.

A knock on the head has misplaced ten years of her life, and Alice isn’t sure she likes who she’s become. It turns out, though, that forgetting might be the most memorable thing that has ever happened to Alice.

Sounds fabulous right? If you leave a comment, you’ll be entered to win one of five copies. We’ll randomly select the winners after 6pm EST on Monday, September 12.

CHICK LIT IS NOT DEAD PRESENTS…LIANE MORIARTY’S 5 LOVES AND A DUD

Am I meant to be writing about my relationship history here? In which case, I would need to change it to:  25 Duds and FINALLY, just when I was about to give up, a Love.  But perhaps ‘loves’ can mean whatever I want it to mean?  I’ve got that panicky exam question feeling, as if I’m about to miss the whole point. I may be overthinking this.  I’m the eldest child. We like to get things right.  Well, here goes:

LOVES

1.     Books, books, books.  From the musty-smelling classics with yellowing, delicate pages at Grandma’s house to the chunky, racy, paperbacks in my Dad’s study, I’ve always loved them with an obsessive passion.   The only time I’ve ever opened a gift and literally screamed with delight was when my sister gave me a new Anne Tyler book for Christmas and I didn’t even know she had a new one out.

2.     That first glorious hit of caffeine.   Fellow coffee addicts will understand. I guess I wouldn’t kill for my morning cup of coffee. I might steal. I’d definitely lie.

3.     Readers who write to me. I don’t know why I still haven’t written to any of my favourite authors now I know how wonderful it is to receive letters and emails from readers.  When I finish a book I love, I just greedily reach for the next one, whereas some people take the time to write and say what a book meant to them.  It’s the ultimate in good manners, and I’ll never take it for granted.

4.     Google.  How in the world did we live without Google? I just Googled that question and wasted half an hour discovering that no-one knows how we lived without Google.  The other day a bird flew into my house and got trapped in the living room. I was panicking. The bird was panicking. His friends gathered at the windows, tapping their beaks against the glass, chirping, GET OUT, GET OUT! My children were thrilled, running about, flapping their arms. What did I do? I googled, ‘bird trapped in house’ and within seconds, I had a solution. (Google it if you want to know.)

5.     Listening to my children make each other laugh.  I had a lot of trouble getting and staying pregnant, and for many years I thought I might have to accept that I wouldn’t ever be a mother.  Now I have a 3 year old son and an eighteen month old daughter, and their wicked laughter is the sweetest sound I’ve ever heard. I wish I could send it back through time with a message to myself, “Listen to this.  It’s all going to be worth it.” Maybe the message got through and I heard them laughing in my dreams.   (Lucky I didn’t send back the sound of their tantrums.)

and a DUD

This whole horrible aging business.  From what I understand, every day that goes by, I’m going to look and feel just a tiny bit worse.  Shouldn’t someone write a letter of complaint about that? Why haven’t we lobbied and legislated against it? (Yes, yes, I know the alternative is worse.)

That seemed like a really depressing note on which to end, so I turned to trusty Google and found this quote:

I have enjoyed greatly the second blooming…suddenly you find – at the age of 50 say, – that a whole new life has opened before you.” Agatha Christie.

So maybe aging won’t be such a dud after all.  Thank you, Agatha, and I sure hope you’re right.

Thanks, Liane! xoxo, Liz & Lisa

I want to read this!

Lisa Nelson September 6, 2011 at 7:20 am

Definitely looking forward to reading what Alice forgot! I have a daughter getting married in 11 days, another daughter that just went off to college and one left at home and I’m pretty sure I’m missing at least 10 years. Not sure how it happened or if I’ll ever wake back up to the realty of two in high school (have a son too), one in elementary and one in preschool.

Kara September 6, 2011 at 7:22 am

I leaned back and tried to think of my love’s besides my family. I am still thinking so maybe I will have some laters.

Nina September 6, 2011 at 7:25 am

I have to say I love all of her loves! I have written thank you notes to authors on more than one occasion! Maybe she’ll be next ;)

Definitely loving this. Of course, since the theme of the book is do-over related, I’m missing the 5 do’s and a do-over. Just kidding. This was fantastic. Maybe I’ll send Liane a note after I’m done reading this!

Nicole September 6, 2011 at 8:19 am

I just finished the book last night. I couldn’t stop reading because I wanted to know what happened. I thoroughly enjoyed it! Since the copy I read was not mine, I’d love to have my own copy to loan to my daughters and to read again a few months down the road. Congratulations Liane!

Marianne September 6, 2011 at 9:08 am

Pascale September 6, 2011 at 10:57 am

I read the review on this book over the summer and it is on my wish list…. However, now that I have read Liane’s 5 loves and a dud, I MUST read it soon.

I have turned in to an author fan that ALWAYS writes a note to an author once I have finished a book that I love. It feels good to praise something that someone worked so hard on. it feels even better to get the response from the author (and they almost always do respond). I actually corresponded with and then had the honor of having lunch with Sarah Kate Lynch, MY FAVORITE AUTHOR, because I send her a “fan” note over a year ago. We correspond every now and then and meeting her confirmed why I love her books so much.
I have a feeling I will love this book, What Alice Forgot, and I am anxious to read it. Howver, I will wait to buy it until I know if I win it!!!

I LOVE THIS WEB SITE!!!! I feel so lucky to discover new authors. Lisa and Liz, you ladies really came up with the best idea in the world and I thank you!!!

Amy September 6, 2011 at 3:25 pm

Lauri September 6, 2011 at 4:45 pm

Love the concept of this book! Her list is great. #1 is something I believe all of us here share. I love being in the presence of books. I really want to read this book!

Nina T September 6, 2011 at 5:32 pm

Definitely sounds like a good book. Hoping I win a copy! I also love that she googled that question. I find myself googling everything and people laugh at me, but really, you can find everything on google.

Linda Kish September 6, 2011 at 6:03 pm

Loved the list. don’t worry, aging really isn’t so bad. Beats the alternative.

This is such a great list! Thanks for the chance to win!

ErinB September 6, 2011 at 7:24 pm

#5 is the best. My 8 month old and 4 year old make each other laugh and I just want to freeze the moment. I often just stand there not sure to enjoy it or run and get the video…because i know once this baby starts crawling and taking her sisters things the laughter may die down for a while :-}

Maureen September 7, 2011 at 3:35 am

What an interesting idea for a story.

Julie H. September 7, 2011 at 4:57 am

Would love to read Liane’s book! Have heard really good things about it. Thanks for including the Agatha quote!

Louise Gibney September 7, 2011 at 5:38 am

Best loves and duds so far! Sounds like a good premise for a book too. I hope that’s not me in 4 years… Loved the idea of Googling “life before Google”!

The blurb for this story gave me so many emotions within the few seconds I read it that now I’m DYING to have it in my possession. Holy heck, what would it be like to one day love your husband only to wake up and realize it isn’t working out anymore and you don’t even know why! What a disaster!

I’m so in love with your loves!!! Books, Google, and writing to authors. If I adore a book I email the author immediately, a lot of times I create a nice unexpected bond and we talk for many months afterwards. It’s just a great way to remind the author we love what they do and want them to continue!

Jessica September 7, 2011 at 6:26 am

Sounds like a fun read and similar to Remember Me, which I really liked.

cindy r September 7, 2011 at 9:19 am

I love Liane’s attitude … yes we can reinvent ourselves again … and again …. and perhaps again, Liane! Who knows! Perhaps we can continue to do it until we tire out! Can’t wait to read your novel! Good luck! Cindy writeoncindy@yahoo.com

Mary September 7, 2011 at 9:45 am

Another great, unique storyline ! I love when there is a twist to the girl/boy romance, happy ever after genre.

Kathy September 7, 2011 at 12:15 pm

Sounds a little bit like “Skipping a Beat” which I enjoyed…

Lisa S. September 8, 2011 at 1:16 am

I don’t know what I did before my children came & I’m so glad I have all 3 of them, tantrums too! I love coffee too, do you remember your very 1st taste? Mine was when I was very little & I was with my mom at a friend of hers & they were having a cup in the afternoon & they made a little one for me with lots of milk & sugar. I was hooked! What a great story, she goes ahead in time! wow! Please enter me in the giveaway! Good luck to all! I love books as well & your writing style :0)
