It’s that time of year again. Time for my so-called resolutions.
I found myself, New Years morning, fingers poised on my keyboard as I tried to write an Facebook-worthy resolution status. The usual suspects came to mind, I’m going to me more positive, I’m going to lose ten pounds, etc…And even though there were tons of things I wanted to improve about myself (hello, self hate!), I had a damn hard time coming up with something Facebook worthy. The only thing that made me feel better? I had finally learned how to spell the word resolution without using spell check. Check that off the 2011 list please!
But after some very deep soul searching, I’ve come up with my 2012 list. And I want to hear about yours too! Leave me a comment and I’ll enter you to win an ARC of Spin by Catherine McKenzie. I’ll choose the winner on January 15th after 6pm PST.
LIZ’S SO CALLED 2012 RESOLUTIONS
1. Make more time for the things I love Is there an available fairy godmother out there? Because I need to make a few more hours in the day. I struggled in 2011 to find time to write-something I’m determined to change in 2012. One step in the right direction? The BOSE noise cancelling headphones I got last month. They’re so awesome that the house could be F’ing burning down around me and I wouldn’t hear shit. But, at last I’ll finally have that peace and quiet I’ve been craving to get some writing done.
2. Get my funny back Where the F*CK has it been? I blame a lack of trashy reality TV watching on my part-something I vow to correct ASAP. (You hear that, Dance Moms?) And anyway, considering this is an election year, I’m going to need all the funny I can get! *cue a million ridiculously annoying campaign ads*
3. Read MORE Yes, gi-normous TBR pile, I’m talking to you. I’m going to make you my bitch in 2012. Consider yourself warned.
4. Get in shape *snorts* I know, I know. But if you count carrying three grocery bags on each arm once a week weight training, then at least I’m doing something, right?
5. Skip the fad diets Last month, that freakin’ HCG diet made me a horrible, hungry ogre who wanted to gnaw on her husband’s arm like a hambone. And those annoying people who claimed they were NEVER HUNGRY while on it? LIARS!!! Instead? I downloaded Net Diary, an AWESOME app that helps you track your calories. The anal type-A control freak in me is jumping up and down that I can count every single morsel that enters my mouth in 2012. Except for that BLT with avocado my drunken alter ego devoured at 1am in Vegas last weekend. But let’s just pretend that never happened….
Bonus so-called resolution:
Finish our next book- This one’s easy. At almost 40,000 words and a writing retreat coming up later this month, we should be ready to shop it by March. Want a quick peek at the premise? Hmmm…All I’ll say is that it’s about two childhood best friends who get themselves in a sticky situation and it’s called The Toast. You’ll have to wait on the rest!
*raises glass* Here’s to a great 2012! I hope it’s your best year EVER! xoxo, Liz

I want to read more as well! Hope life slows down enough to make it happen.
Making your TBR pile your bitch just cracked me up! I think I should resolve to stop adding too many books to mine. It is it’s own country!
I’m inspired – I’m just going to adopt all of your resolutions. Thanks for doing the self-reflection for me:) Looking forward to your next book. Good luck on the writing retreat. I truly loved the D Word!
Lots of luck on finishing your next book and on all of your resolutions! Is it lame that I sent myself e-mail reminders throughout 2012 to keep me motivated on mine? ;) Hahaha. (So quick I forget them!)
I can’t wait to read your new book! You guys are awesome! P.S. I’m also trying to be better about my writing schedule…glad I’m not alone!
LOVE this list. Especially the part about getting your funny back. I agree that your lack of reality TV watching hasn’t helped your case, but you’ve still been hysterical, just a slightly less hysterical version of yourself. *smile* Although this post shows that YOU’RE BAAACK. Plus, one episode of Dance Moms will really get your funny back in motion.
And really LOVE the resolution to ditch fad diets. HCG diet Liz is no fun!
And… can’t wait to finish the book. Am so excited about it! Working on my latest chapter today!
Resolutions for 2012 ? I had all the best intentions for 2012. I started working on my first vision board in October 2011. I was going to reclaim my runaway life. Then… January 30th I came home and found my elderly (but very spry) aunt had suffered a stroke while I was at work. From that single 911 call, my life completely left my control. Er, Hospital, Rehab, nursing home (?), power of attorney, living will, regular will,… I am the only local relative who has stepped up to the plate. SO – if anyone out there has been in my situation, PLEASE feel free to share your experience and wisdom. How do I reclaim some modicum of my former life ?
Liz – Resolutions are great. But you definitely have the right idea with your first two. Schedule the fun in your life. It should always be a priority. I work with Drug and Alcohol addicts as a therapist. When I tell them they need to outline a plan for fun and entertainment, they look at me like I have lost my mind. But I am serious. It will keep you young, happy, connected, in touch, and motivated. The rest just comes anyway. So good for you ! Keep making time for the things you love !!!
I wish this had more of a positive tone to it…but there are a couple people in my life that just need to go in 2012. I’m not even close to perfect, but there are some people that just ooze negativity. So over the toxic friendships!
For me, I normally do not make resolutions. However, I do like yours about reading more, which is something I intend to do. Hopefully you don’t mind that I borrowed one of yours =)!
Happy New Year, Liz! Same to you too, Lisa!
My resolution is two-fold, and similar to one of yours, Liz. I resolve to lose my “funk” (I’ve been in one since life turned upside down about almost 4 years ago. I manage to surface for a bit, here & there, but then I get mired down with it all again. This year is THE END of that crap!) & rediscover my “funny” (Oh, how I – and some of the key peeps in my life – have missed Funny Julie!). So, for me, 2012 is going to be the year of lost funk & found funny (from my keyboard to God’s ears!!). I’ll be rooting for you with your list; wish me luck with mine … I’m gonna need it!
xo, Jules
I usually don’t do resolutions…so hard to stick to, especially after the first few days of the new year! LOL But I’m with you on the read more and get in shape!!! I have a great TBR pile and I hope to add to it!
i’ve got “read more” on my list too. they need to be new books tho, instead of “dang i’m tired and just want something to distract me while i take a bath” type books.
I want to unplug more to give myself more time to read!
Here’s my resolution, since you asked. “I want to know Christ—yes, to know the power of his resurrection and participation in his sufferings, becoming like him in his death, and so, somehow, attaining to the resurrection from the dead. ” Phil 3:10-11
Also, can’t wait to read The Toast. Sounds exciting!
I resolve to write more and view less.
A new computer would be nice, too; this one keeps hanging.
Thats a great list Liz! My new years resolution is if course to read more – shelfari tells me I’m already ahead of last years pace – and to have more fun!
My resolutions are pretty much the same as every year — be grateful, move more, eat less, try to enjoy life and worry less. I will say that I added a couple of specifics like make my bed and keep the kitchen island clear. I would like to blog more frequently too.
My resolution this year is to tell off more people than last year. Need to release more anger.
Amen
I hear ya on #3…My TBR list is OUT. OF. CONTROL!
Liz – Love the List! My resolutions:
1. Find a REAL magic wand
2. Discover that I really have been trapped in a size 2 body all these years
3. Find Daniel Craig on my doorstep
4. Be able to successfully ignore mean people
5. Find my to-do list!
If all else fails, I’ll go for being thankful my family is happy and healthy in 2012 :)
Laura
Several of those sound familiar to me! I’d like to read more too, and eat healthier. That Net Diary looks worth checking out, they do say writing down everything you eat helps you stay accountable.
Happy 2012!
Great list! I have two resolutions this year :
1) try to read one NON FICTION book per month. I am 2/3 of the way through the first one, A Long Way Gone, by Ishmael Beah. I bought it at our school’s bookfair. It is hard to put down. Difficult story but so well written… This is a hard resolution because I have so many other great fiction to read….
2) get our photos into photo albums. I say this all the time, but this time, I will get AT LEAST last years photos in, and I will do it as a photobook, like Shutterfly.
I would love more time for things that I love!
Spin sounds like a great book.
Ooh, my TBR list is ridiculous too – that needs to be taken care of!
My goal is to declutter this year – if I keep up the way I am, I’m going to end up on Hoarders some day!
Good luck with all of your resolutions. Mine is to give myself more “me” time. It can be tough, but I’m really going to try extra hard with it this year.
Your list is so similar to my own. I HATE fad diets! They are full of crap. I just started counting calories and have been successful thus far…here’s hoping :)
I vow to make good use of my gym membership by figuring out how much it costs me per session if I don’t go often.
I don’t usually make resolutions, but I do need to start taking better care of myself this year. I need to get back to the gym, start eating better and reduce the stress in my life!
My list isn’t too extensive. Just read and review more books and stop biting my nails. Well so far my second resolution isn’t going so good.

Hey y’all! Thanks for sharing your resolutions with me-I LOVED it!!!! Good luck keeping them in 2012! xoxoxoxo
Congrats to Julesfig@xxx.com! She’s won a copy of SPIN! Thanks to y’all for all your comments! xoxoxo
Yay!! : ) Thanks so much! I have followed you ladies for a few years now, but I think this post is my favorite (no offense intended for past postings). It’s the first time I put what I know I need to do in actual words, and now … I’m running with it! After all, I have no choice. You ladies have QUITE the following, and I’d be mortified if I got caught slacking, or not living up to my word!! Off I go to finish 2 organizing projects I have on the To Do list (buh-bye chaotic mess I have been calling an office!), and then it’s time (later this week) to revamp the old resume & engage in the all too daunting task – after almost 11 years out of the work force *gasp* – of finding legit work I can do from home. Thank you, thank you, thank you! :) xo, Jules
Congrats, Jules! Hope you enjoy the book. And thanks so much Liz for making SPIN a part of it!
